Homemade pizza

Good pizza starts with the dough and I’ve been using a great pizza dough recipe that is ready in 30 minutes:

Pizza Dough Recipe

1 ½ C. warm water (120-130 degrees Fahrenheit)

1 package dry Fast Rise yeast

1 T. honey

1 t. salt

3 T. olive oil

4 C. unbleached all purpose flour

Combine first four ingredients in bowl. Stir until yeast dissolves. Mix in oil. Gradually add enough flour to make soft dough. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 8 minutes). Add more flour if sticky.

Pour a little olive oil over the dough to cover the ball and place in a bowl. Cover bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let stand 30 minutes. Roll out crusts and place on baking pan. You can add corn meal to the baking pan, if so desired.


Now, on to the toppings. I grew up eating this pizza, so I’m partial to no tomato sauce. We typically use olive oil and spread a very thin layer over the crust, but if you like tomato sauce, I have used just a few tablespoons on the crust along with the olive oil. Next, I chop three medium to large cloves of garlic (we love garlic) and sprinkle that over the dough. Chopped onions, green olives, a sprinkle of salt and a heavy dose of freshly ground pepper follow. Have a meat-loving group? We’ve diced up ham and pineapple, sauteed sausage (spicy pork or turkey with red pepper flakes added, we’ve used both), sauteed chicken strips or layered on pepperoni. Next, sprinkle on parmesan cheese and top it all off with mozzarella (1 bag shredded or 1 8 oz. block shredded).

Pre-heat oven to 450 degrees. Bake 20 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes and serve.
